Ancient Beauty – UNESCO Heritage: OHRID in North Macedonia
Ohrid is one of the oldest and most fascinating cities in Europe. This UNESCO World Heritage Site on the shores of Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia captivates visitors with its thousands of years of history, impressive churches, Byzantine art, and unique setting.
My video begins with some atmospheric impressions of Ohrid and Lake Ohrid, including aerial footage. We then dive straight into the first major highlight: the historic old town. Here, we explore the Church of Saint Sophia, famous for its 11th-century frescoes, which are considered among the most important examples of Byzantine wall paintings in Europe. Afterwards, we follow the lakeside paths to the iconic Church of St. John at Kaneo, spectacularly perched above Lake Ohrid.
Our journey continues to Plaošnik Hill and the impressive St. Clement Church before we visit Samuel’s Fortress and enjoy magnificent views over the old town and the lake. Another highlight is the Church of Holy Mary Peribleptos, home to extraordinary late 13th-century frescoes that rank among the finest achievements of Byzantine art. Together with the Church of St. John at Kaneo and the Church of Saint Sophia, it is one of the most important monuments within the UNESCO World Heritage region of Ohrid.
However, Ohrid is much more than its historical landmarks. We stroll along the lakeside promenade, explore the city center, visit the Ali Pasha Mosque, Kamensko Church, the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid, and many other places that shape the unique character of this remarkable city.
Be sure to stay until the very end. During the closing credits, I will take you to the beautiful Monastery of Saint Naum, located directly on the shores of Lake Ohrid and considered one of the most picturesque and atmospheric places in North Macedonia. As a bonus, we also visit the fascinating Bay of Bones, an open-air museum offering insights into the lives of the people who lived on the shores of Lake Ohrid around 3,000 years ago.
I was truly impressed by Ohrid and Lake Ohrid. The combination of history, culture, nature, and the relaxed atmosphere by the water pleasantly surprised me and makes this destination one of the most beautiful places I have visited in the Balkans.

Doch Ohrid ist weit mehr als seine historischen Sehenswürdigkeiten. Wir schlendern entlang der Promenade am See, erkunden das Stadtzentrum, besuchen die Ali-Pasha-Moschee, die Kamensko-Kirche, das antike Theater von Ohrid und viele weitere Orte, die den besonderen Charakter dieser Stadt prägen.
Bleibt auch unbedingt bis zum Ende dabei. Im Abspann erwartet Euch das sehr sehenswerte am Ufer des Ohridsees gelegene Kloster Sveti Naum, einer der schönsten und stimmungsvollsten Orte Nordmazedoniens. Und als Bonus besuchen wir die faszinierende Bay of Bones – ein Freilichtmuseum, das einen Einblick in das Leben der Menschen am Ohridsee vor rund 3.000 Jahren gibt.
Ich war von Ohrid und dem Ohridsee sehr begeistert. Die Mischung aus Geschichte, Kultur, Natur und der entspannten Atmosphäre am Wasser hat mich positiv überrascht und macht diesen Ort für mich zu einem der schönsten Reiseziele auf dem Balkan.
