Soooo beautiful and lively: CATANIA in Sicily!

Catania, also called the “black city”, is the second largest city in the region of Sicily after Palermo. A volcanic eruption in 1669 and an earthquake in 1693 almost completely destroyed the city. Then, according to plans by the architect Giovanni Battista Vaccarini (1702-1768), the city was rebuilt with churches and palaces in the Baroque style of the 18th century.

Catania is located close to Mount Etna and offers a variety of sights. In the historic city centre, there is incomparable late Baroque architecture to discover, thanks to which Catania was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Cattedrale di Sant’Agata, for example, is an impressive sight with its beautiful façades, magnificently decorated interior and many works of art. In front of it, on the Piazza del Duomo, you will also find the city’s landmark: a fountain with an elephant made of black lava stone (Fontana dell’Elefante).

Lava stone as a building material is visible everywhere in Catania: in palaces, homes, churches and steets. The ancient theatre and the Roman amphitheatre are also built of the black stone.

I also tried to show this contrast with my choice of music and the editing. As always, I focused on the old town and left out the beaches and the harbour.

Catania, auch die “schwarze Stadt” genannt, ist nach Palermo ist die zweitgrößte Stadt der Region Sizilien. Durch einen Vulkanausbruch im Jahr 1669 und ein Erdbeben im Jahr 1693 wurde sie fast völlig zerstört. Darauf entstand nach Plänen des Architekten Giovanni Battista Vaccarini (1702-1768) eine Stadt mit Kirchen und Palästen im barocken Baustil des 18. Jahrhunderts, die heute noch vorzufinden sind.

Catania liegt in unmittelbarer Nähe des Ätna und bietet eine Vielzahl an Sehenswürdigkeiten. Im historischen Stadtkern gibt es eine unvergleichliche, spätbarocke Architektur zu entdecken, dank der Catania von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt wurde. Einen eindrucksvollen Anblick bietet zum Beispiel die Cattedrale di Sant’Agata mit ihren kunstvollen Fassaden, dem prächtig verzierten Inneren und vielen Kunstwerken begeistert. Davor, auf dem Piazza del Duomo, findet sich auch das Wahrzeichen der Stadt: Ein Brunnen mit einem Elefanten aus schwarzem Lavagestein (Fontana dell’Elefante).

Die Verarbeitung des Lavagesteins als Baumaterial ist in Catania überall sichtbar: an Palästen, Wohnhäusern, Kirchen, als Straßenpflaster und am Hafen. Auch das antike Theater und das römische Amphitheater sind aus dem schwarzen Stein gebaut.

Folge mir und meiner Kamera und sieh selbst, wie beeindruckend und abwechslungsreich die Stadt ist. Lebhafte, aufregende und kunstvolle Eindrücke wechseln sich immer wieder mit sehr ruhigen Plätzen ab, die zum Entspannen einladen. Diesen Kontrast habe ich auch mit meiner Musikauswahl und dem Schnitt versucht, auszudrücken. Wie immer habe ich mich dabei auf die Altstadt fokussiert und die Strände sowie den Hafen ausgespart.
