SYRACUSE – A UNESCO World Heritage Site on the eat coast of Sicily
Known as the “Pearl of the Greeks”, Syracuse (Italian: Siracusa) lies on the east coast of Sicily and, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, fascinates with its cultural diversity from 2,700 years of history. In antiquity, Syracuse was one of the most powerful and glamorous metropolises in the Mediterranean world; today, with 123,000 inhabitants, it is a lively provincial city.
The fantastic location in the south-east of Sicily with the offshore island of Ortygia and the numerous sights and ancient excavations from thousands of years of history make Syracuse a special Sicilian attraction. The most important sights are located on Ortygia and form a picturesque ambience amidst Greek, Roman and Baroque architecture – a very worth seeing and unique mixture of different eras.
In my video, I have focused on the urban area and in particular on the wonderful old town centre on the island of Ortygia. Those who know me and my videos know that I am very enthusiastic about old towns. And here, too, I was very fascinated by the old town and the atmosphere. I am happy if I can transfer a little of this fascination and enthusiasm to you when you watch my video.

Bekannt als die „Perle der Griechen“ liegt Syrakus (ital. Siracusa) an der Ostküste Siziliens und fasziniert als UNESCO Weltkulturerbe mit seiner kulturellen Vielfalt aus 2.700 Jahren Geschichte. In der Antike war Syrakus eine der mächtigsten und glanzvollsten Metropolen der Mittelmeerwelt, heute ist sie mit 123.000 Einwohnern eine lebendige Provinzstadt.
Die fantastische Lage im Südosten Siziliens mit der vorgelagerten Insel Ortygia und den zahlreichen Sehenswürdigkeiten und antiken Ausgrabungen aus der jahrtausendealten Geschichte machen Syrakus zu einer besonderen sizilianischen Attraktion. Die wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten befinden sich auf Ortygia und bilden ein malerisches Ambiente inmitten griechischer, römischer und barocker Architektur – eine sehr sehenswerte und einzigartige Mischung aus verschiedenen Epochen.
In meinem Video habe ich mich auf das Stadtgebiet und insbesondere auf den wunderbaren Altstadtkern auf der Insel Ortygia fokussiert. Wer mich und meine Videos kennt, weiss, dass ich mich sehr für Altstädte begeistere. Und auch hier haben mich die Altstadt und die Atmosphäre sehr fasziniert.
